Savannah's Deadliest Fights of the Strongest Predators | FULL EPISODE | Nature Animal Documentary follows the lion, the African wild dog and the elephant through October on the Savuti Marsh in Botswana, the hottest and driest month of the year, when the land holds less than a tenth of its rainy season herds, and then dives to the floor of the Mariana Trench, nearly seven miles beneath the Pacific. At the edge of the world, nothing lives on what the place itself can provide.
Through cinematic footage and educational storytelling, this documentary follows the meals that walk, swim and fall in from somewhere else. An outcast lioness, driven to the fringes by a stronger pride, waits in a tangle of dead branches for the passing herds. A pack of wild dogs raising pups through the heat must drink among elephants that grow short tempered as the water shrinks, the way researchers in Hwange recorded smaller species shifting their drinking hours to avoid them. Off South Africa, the sardine run swims north against a warm current, and dolphins, gannets and sharks tear a bait ball apart in under ten minutes. In Alaska, humpbacks blow a net of bubbles around a herring shoal, the same whales whose genetic trail links the calving grounds of the Marianas to the Commander Islands of Russia.
What follows is the part almost no wildlife film goes down to see. Less than two percent of what grows in sunlit water ever reaches the trench floor as marine snow, and a sunken whale can feed a community of life for decades. The dumbo octopus swallows its prey whole and has been found more than four miles down in the Java Trench. A little over five miles down, no fish can survive the water pressing into its own cells, yet the amphipod Hirondellea lives all the way to the Challenger Deep, carrying an enzyme that digests wood fallen from the land. In Savuti, the meal walks in from somewhere else. At the bottom of the Challenger Deep, it falls from another world.
