Slide Lake to Enjar Lake: A Forgotten North Cascades Trail

Enjar Lake, tucked dramatically at the base of Snowking Mountain, was the objective, but the access alone demands respect. A rugged 21-mile gravel road delivers potholes, brush encroaching tight enough to scrape paint along both flanks, and two washouts that pose a real obstacle for low-clearance vehicles, with minimal pullouts to yield to oncoming traffic. From the trailhead, the route passes Slide Lake — a scenic basin with solid camping and fishing potential, though the fish stayed hidden — before the tread deteriorates into a heavily overgrown, bushwhack-only approach requiring sharp route-finding to reach the lake.
