Gabriel Fauré's Requiem is one of the most beloved works in choral music, known for its subdued and serene approach to the traditional funeral ritual. Instead of the usual drama and fear often associated with death, Fauré's selection of requiem texts emphasizes peace, enlightenment, and the hope for a peaceful transition to eternal life. The requiem has a complex history, with many different versions circulating. We sing and play John Rutter's 1983 version, which attempted to approximate Fauré's original instrumentation as closely as possible. It is notable that, aside from a solo, there are no violins.
