​Christian theology often describes salvation as a three-part process that unfolds over time in a believer's life. This framework helps to understand how a person is saved from the penalty, power, and ultimately the presence of sin. The three steps are: ​Justification: This is the initial, instantaneous act of God that happens when a person places their faith in Jesus Christ. At this moment, God forgives all of their sins (past, present, and future) and declares them righteous in His sight. This is a judicial declaration, as if the person has never sinned, because the righteousness of Christ is credited to them. Justification saves a person from the penalty of sin. ​Sanctification: This is the ongoing, lifelong process of becoming more like Christ. After justification, a believer begins to be set apart for God's purposes. Sanctification is a cooperative effort between the believer and the Holy Spirit, where the believer progressively overcomes the power of sin in their life and grows in holiness. This process saves a person from the power of sin. ​Glorification: This is the final and future stage of salvation. It occurs when a believer dies and goes to be with Christ or at the time of the Second Coming of Jesus. In glorification, the believer is given a new, perfect, resurrected body and is made completely free from the presence and temptation of sin. This is the ultimate fulfillment of salvation, where the believer is made perfect and lives in God's presence forever. Glorification saves a person from the presence of sin.
