What dynasty is Phantom Blade Zero set in? Its director has given two answers, more or less the Ming in English and no real geography at all in Chinese. The real answer is stranger. The game is built out of real places, and S-GAME itself sent a Chinese state art journal three of them, each beside its version in the game. This is which places, who chose them, and why none of it is quite real. The architect who directs it and the architects who lay out its levels, Liang's three levels, the scans behind the game, the old Beijing steelworks inside the Valley Sha-Chi Tower, the folk culture S-GAME puts inside its places, the ink maps and the colour.
