Echoes Of Seikilos

This piece draws its inspiration from the oldest fully surviving song, dating from the late first century. It opens with a quotation of the original melody, accompanied by an English rendering of the Greek text. I’ve aimed to harmonise the melody in a way that honours its character, allowing the music to unfold and expand organically from that ancient source. The piano’s spread chords are shaped to evoke the resonance of an Ancient Greek lyre, offering a subtle timbral bridge to the past. Throughout, I’ve tried to capture a sense of Antiquity by weaving in unexpected harmonic turns - gestures that feel both archaic and newly rediscovered.
