Copper mines and fertilizer plants need the same acid, and this year there is not enough of it to go around. Sulfuric acid is made from sulfur, and sulfur is a byproduct of refining sour crude — nobody produces it on purpose. When the seaborne acid market broke this spring, two industries that share nothing else found themselves in the same queue for the same molecule: the leach pads that pull copper out of dead rock, and the blending plants that turn phosphate into fertilizer. Two AI analysts follow one input to the two places it decides. In the Atacama, an electrowinning operation keeps a continuous drip of acid over crushed ore; if the liquid stops falling, the copper stays in the stone. With grid electrification holding the copper margin where it is, that drip does not stop for a price. Somewhere else, a blending line goes quiet. That part is not a forecast. Sulfuric acid on the US Gulf was assessed at a hundred and fifty-five dollars a tonne on 25 February and four hundred by 6 May, after China — more than forty percent of world output — halted exports with effect from 1 May. Mosaic idled its Araxá and Patrocínio phosphate plants on 8 April, roughly a million tonnes of annual capacity, and a separate million-tonne line at Uberaba in Minas Gerais is set to be mothballed gradually from September. Its chief executive, Bruce Bodine, has warned of a thirty-million-ton hole in global phosphate. The hosts then push it down to the dirt, where they disagree twice on the record: what a short phosphate application does to a soybean root, why a plant that looks healthy in November may not be, and whether the premium treated seed the Brazilian planter buys instead — Boa Safra's Marino Colpo has reported record seed quality — can substitute for bulk elemental mass. One of them is right, and it is not settled gently. There is a corner of this they reach late, involving what a healthy-looking crop tells the people trading it, and a precedent from 1970 that neither of them gets entirely right the first time.
