A pope who owned almost nothing gave away nearly all of it. Thirty years after he died, his coffin was opened — and his body had not decayed.
Giuseppe Sarto was born into poverty in northern Italy and rose to become Pope Pius X, one of the most beloved pontiffs of the twentieth century. He gave away nearly everything he was given, sheltered earthquake survivors inside his own palace, and is reported to have healed children through prayer. He died in 1914, weeks after the First World War began — a war he had foreseen and begged to prevent. Decades later, an examination of his remains revealed something few expected: his body, never embalmed, had not decayed.
