Sarajevo and Mostar still preserve remarkable traces of this heritage. In 1878, Bosnia and Herzegovina came under Austro-Hungarian administration, marking a new chapter in its history. We explore how rising nationalism and political tensions in the Balkans led to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, the event that triggered the chain reaction leading to World War I. After the war, Bosnia became part of the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later renamed Yugoslavia. We then move into the socialist era under Josip Broz Tito, when Bosnia and Herzegovina became one of the republics of socialist Yugoslavia.
