Hiawassee has long been an important route in the Orlando area. Older accounts describe it as part of the route between Old Winter Garden Road and Silver Star Road. The area was once more rural, with orange groves and open land, but it later grew into a mix of neighborhoods, businesses, and parks. South Hiawassee also provides access to Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake.
