Lake Keowee or Lake Lanier? Both are beautiful Southeast lakes with great boating and waterfront homes, but they live very differently. Lake Lanier is a big, busy recreational lake in Atlanta's backyard, and Lake Keowee is a smaller, quieter residential lake in Upstate South Carolina with blue-green water and Blue Ridge Mountain views.
If lake living is part of your plan for moving to the Southeast, these two have probably both come up. I live and work right here on Keowee, and in this video I walk through the pros and cons of each: lake size, water and scenery, boating, Atlanta access versus the Upstate SC lifestyle, restaurants and shopping, real estate, docks and shoreline rules, community life, and what everyday life actually feels like on each lake.
A few things I tell every lake buyer:
You don't just choose the house, you choose the part of the lake. On Keowee, some homes are five minutes from groceries and restaurants and others are twenty. Ask us about what we call the Lake Keowee convenience loop.
Evaluate the lot before the house. You can remodel a kitchen. You can't change water depth, slope, the walk to the dock, or the view.
Understand the dock first. Keowee's shoreline is managed by Duke Energy and Lanier's by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and neither one lets you do whatever you want on the water.
Stick around to the end, where I share the type of buyer I see fit best on each lake.

One last piece of advice: don't pick either lake off a three-day vacation. Drive the roads, go to the grocery store, and get out on the water on a Saturday in July. If you're dreaming about living or retiring on the lake, call, text, or message me. We'd be glad to give you a personal introduction to Lake Keowee, Lake Hartwell, Lake Jocassee, and the rest of the Upstate so you can see what it's like when the lake is your backyard.
