Alva Vanderbilt Won The Divorce That Shocked New York. Her DAUGHTER Paid For It At The ALTAR In March of 1895, a New York court gave Alva Vanderbilt what no woman in her circle had dared to ask for. A divorce from the grandson of the richest man in America, custody of her children, the Vanderbilt name, and one hundred thousand dollars a year. On paper, a clean victory. But the testimony that won it was sealed. A woman in Paris had appeared at exactly the right moment, and some people believed the husband had arranged his own disgrace. Newport turned its back. Then Alva set out to rebuild her name the only way she knew. Her seventeen-year-old daughter Consuelo was in love with another man. A servant was posted outside her bedroom door. Eight months after the divorce, she walked down the aisle of Saint Thomas Church crying behind her veil. Thirty-one years later, Alva told a church investigator what really happened in that house. Remember the name of that church.
