Now, why would it make sense to spend a considerable amount of time tuning in your resume? The simple explanation to that is because the resume screening step is the one that filters the most applicants as compared to any other step in the interviewing process.
What are some good tips when it comes to having a great resume? At first be sure it focuses on your strengths, and no matter what you write, keep it on a positive tone.
Then, understand you will be tested for culture fit, and this is from the moment someone looks over your resume, so how do you ensure your resume is in line with Marriott’s values? Well, it's not by accident that I presented the values in the previous section, so you could eventually use some of the keywords from the values and have your relevant experience worded in a way that resonates with the type of thinking that resonates with Marriott. Just think about excellence and integrity, for example.
Now one lesser know fact about resume screening in general is that, according to some studies, recruiters spend no more than 6 seconds to review a resume. So just go ahead and try this simple exercise, read your CV in 6 seconds… would you hire yourself based on the first 6 seconds of reading your CV? What can improve there? Maybe Place your most relevant information on top.
And finally, be sure to triple check for typos. And the reason why I’m saying this is sinc you spent all the extra time to make a custom tailored resume just for Marriott - wouldn’t it be a pity if you hurried a few sentences there with some obvious typos? Recruiters are particularly sensitive to these things.
Interview process and advice
So before going into specifics, it’s very important to understand Marriott sells great experineces, so it should come as no surprise they are really good at creating a great applicant experience. They have one of the highest percentage of positive interviewee experiences on Glassdoor.
Also, they do a ton of university recruiting and participate at many career fairs - they call it the Marriott International Voyage Program. In such a scenario, you can usually apply both online, or directly on campus - where there can be an initial one on one interview either that same or the following day.
The process may vary depending on your location, but as a general idea, they’ll inevitably send you a personality profile test, ask you quite a few behavioral questions and also have you through a recorded video interview. Then they’ll let you know if you made it for the final on-site interview event. At the interviewing event there will be a two on one interview, where they will be testing your behavioral and essentially people skills - this is when you have to bring in your A game, and the STAR interviewing method which I’ll explain in detail next in the video
For the the voyage program, process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months.
