THE DIMENSIONAL DETANGLE | WORKING FLAT — MAYNES HAIR HEALTH SYSTEM
This is the first look into my approach to hair health and self-maintenance through my virtual consultations.
What you’re watching is called a Dimensional Detangle, and the technique I’m teaching here is called Working Flat.
Working Flat is about learning how to work with the hair’s natural dimensions instead of fighting against them. The hands and the tool have to work together so that you’re not simply dragging a brush through the hair — you’re actually guiding the hair, controlling tension, and working through the entire ecosystem.
THE BASICS OF WORKING FLAT:
1. Start with wet hair.
2. Add conditioner to give the hair slip and support the detangling process.
3. Work vertically with your brush.
4. Then begin working horizontally with your brush.
5. Throughout the entire process, your hands and your tool must work together.
I went through this entire technique with my model while she performed it herself in her own bathroom. That’s a major part of what I want these virtual consultations to accomplish: teaching you how to understand and maintain your own hair rather than making you permanently dependent on someone else to do it for you.
This is only the beginning.
The Maynes Hair Health System will continue to break down the fundamentals of hair health, grooming, detangling, structural maintenance, the Dimensional Trim, air-drying, and the relationship between the hair, scalp, and its environment.
I’ll also be sharing more videos featuring my models so you can see these concepts applied to different heads of hair, textures, densities, lengths, and lifestyles.
And there’s a bigger conversation happening here about protecting the scalp and understanding the role of hair as physical coverage. Research has found an association between male-pattern baldness and skin cancers, particularly cancers occurring on the scalp and head/neck, with greater UV exposure appearing to be an important factor. If you’re trying Working Flat and something isn’t making sense, comment below and tell me exactly where you’re getting stuck. I can answer questions, troubleshoot what you’re experiencing, and use your questions to help determine what I should demonstrate in the next videos.
If there’s something specific about your hair you want me to teach, comment that too.

More is coming.
