The Dent de Nendaz is a 2,462-meter-high mountain peak in the Valais Alps that towers directly above the resort town of Haute-Nendaz. It offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Rhône Valley, the Bernese Alps, and the mountain lake Lac Noir, which lies directly below.
Key Information About the Hike
• Summit elevation: 2,462 m above sea level
• Starting point: Tracouet mountain station (2,200 m), easily accessible by gondola from Haute-Nendaz.
• Ascent: From Lac Noir, a mountain trail leads steeply upward to the summit cross in just under 1 to 1.5 hours.
• Difficulty: Sure-footedness required (classified as a moderately difficult mountain hike).
Popular route variations
• The classic route (direct ascent): Tracouet – Lac Noir – Dent de Nendaz and back via the same path (approx. 1.5 to 2 hours round trip).
• The Ridge Loop: Ascend to the summit, then continue along the ridge toward Basso d’Alou. From Pointe de Balavaux, you can enjoy the view of the Cleuson Dam. The descent leads past the famous Balavaux larch trees—some up to 800 years old—back to Tracouet or down into the valley.
