That is the reason why lion dances are popular and requested for weddings. In the video, you will see people handing the lions a piece of lettuce and a red envelope as a form of luck and good fortune. In Chinese, this is called the "Choi Ching". Choi Ching translates to "plucking green vegetables" in particular lettuce or cabbage which is known as Choi. Lettuce or cabbage are used because the word in Chinese sounds similar to the Chinese word for fortune. Chinese lions then scatter lettuce leaves to symbolize a fresh start for the new year and the spreading of good luck.
