BANGGAI ISLANDS (Part 1) - the Banggai Islands are actually a cluster of larger islands in the northwestern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia. They look small on a map compared to the larger main island, but I was surprised to find out how long it takes to travel between the islands (especially by boat) and how deceptively large each island is. The larger cluster of Islands is about the size of Bali! But despite some long travel times, there are many interesting and beautiful natural attractions in the area - travertine waterfalls 💦, a spring fed jewel toned lake 🏝️, quaint fishing villages 🎣, plenty of coral reefs 🪸, beautiful white sand beaches 🏖️ and even a remote lake full of stingless jellyfish! 🪼😳 Starting from the port town of Luwuk, we explored the Piala waterfall before heading out to the nearest island, Peleng, where we spent a couple nights in a local homestay right over the water and explored the uniquely beautiful bays surrounding the village, which display a wide range of hues due to limestone deposits from the freshwater springs that flow into the ocean.
