Can't change chords yet? You're not doing anything wrong—you just skipped a step.
Most beginners try to play full chords before they can keep time. So they're fighting two battles at once—fingering and rhythm. No wonder it feels impossible.
In this video, I'm taking it right back to basics. We're using the 12-bar blues progression from "Johnny B Goode" by Chuck Berry (transposed to the key of A), and building it up in 4 simple stages:
🎸 Stage 1: Open bass strings (no fingers)
🎸 Stage 2: Two-string power chords – A5, D5, E5 (1 finger)
🎸 Stage 3: Three-string power chords (2 fingers)
🎸 Stage 4: Full open chords – A, D, E (3 fingers)
At every stage, we use the same rhythm—starting with semibreves, then crotchets, then quavers. By the time you reach full chords, the timing is already locked in. You only have to think about one new thing at a time.
This is the exact process I used with a student recently who just couldn't get chord changes. It worked for them. It'll work for you.
