It consists of the content I consider fundamental for studying the Bolognese fencing tradition and its system of fencing in a systematical manner. While the requirement’s might not seem “basics”, together they form a solid foundation in understanding the theory of the system and applying it. It should be understood that this is not an exam for a beginner - getting invited into this exam, and passing it, takes at least two years of dedicated training. The exam does not require perfection in the candidate’s performance, as this is the first level of the rank system, but a certain baseline must to be met in that regard as well. The primary functions of the exam are 1) to prove that the student is putting serious effort in their training in learning the art, this is the requirement to be invited into the exam in the first place, 2) and that the student understands and is able to apply their knowledge in freeplay. Additionally, students must show quality of character for whom I am willing to grant the rank in my system - this is an evaluation which will be done through getting to know the student and seeing that they have healthy values in general in life and have the character to act according to them. In the exam the student is tested for the following frameworks of technique and theory: -Manciolino’s Spada da filo plays with a partner -Marozzo’s Spada da filo plays both alone and with a partner -dall’Agocchie’s Varying Guards plays both alone and with a partner The student is to perform these plays with a sufficient level of technique, control, and understanding both alone (when required) and with a partner. The student is also tested for their ability to do freeplay by having three rounds of three minutes with an unaccompanied sidesword against two of my assistant instructors and I. During the rounds the student must prove that they: -are able to apply the Bolognese fencing theory in freeplay -can control their actions in a freeplay setting -are able to perform the required amount of freeplay in a good form -demonstrate their virtù in a form of a proper martial spirit and ability Excellent work again, Sami!
