“What We Brought Home” is a country song for my dad—and for every father who’s ever wondered, “Was I a good dad?” As my dad has gotten older and found himself in declining health, he’s been reflecting on our childhood. He talks about the trips he planned and the memories he hoped to give my older brother, younger sister, and me. We sometimes remember completely different details than he expected. But every story has something in common: we remember being loved. He built the house I came home to from the hospital with his own hands. He became a firefighter, led high-country retreats, and encouraged fathers to bring their sons so they could learn what being a man looked like in practice. He showed me a Christlike servant’s heart through everyday actions—giving rides, watching the dog, making time, and listening like a friend while loving like a father.
