There is PACT Act gold printed on your DD 214, and most veterans who have kept that form for decades have never read it as evidence. Since the PACT Act became law on August 10, 2022, a few lines on that one page can prove the hardest part of a toxic exposure claim: where you served. It is one of the most overlooked keys to veterans benefits. On VA Benefits Brief we walk through the form line by line, on the new version and on the older Vietnam-era version, where the box numbers are different. We start with the right copy, the long Member 4 copy, and how to get it free. Then we read your job, your foreign service time, your medals and campaign ribbons, your remarks, and your character of service, and what each one can and cannot prove for your veterans benefits. We explain the word the PACT Act runs on, presumptive, and why it means you prove where you were, not that the smoke or the spray made you sick. We show what these veterans benefits can be worth at the 2026 rates, and the honest limits: why a Vietnam Service Medal names a region rather than a spot, why many veterans on blood pressure pills are rated zero, and why a current diagnosis still matters. Then we cover what to do next: a three-step check you can run at the kitchen table, a supplemental claim if you were denied before 2022, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation for a surviving spouse, a DD Form 215 if the gold is missing from your form, and which veterans the VA moves to the front of the line. All dollar figures come from the VA compensation rate table effective December 1, 2025. Every rule named here is printed in Title 38, and the sources are listed below so you can check each one before you file for veterans benefits.
