Track 22: “After the Storm”
This is my interpretation of a modern woman, who ls similar to "Scarlet" in Gone with the Wind. It's a Southern story about a young woman whose entire world is shattered by disaster.
At twenty-three, she believes the life around her is permanent — the family estate outside Savannah, the wealth, the security, and the people she loves. Then a devastating hurricane changes everything. Her mother is gone, her father is broken, the family fortune is revealed to be far more fragile than she ever knew, and suddenly she is left fighting to save the one thing she cannot let go of: the land.
What begins as survival slowly becomes ambition.
This song is about loss, reinvention, pride, power, and the kind of strength that can save you — but can also change you.
💬 Let's talk in the comments:
Have you ever had a moment in life that completely changed who you were?
Do you think losing everything can sometimes reveal what matters most?

LYRICS
Twenty-three and certain
Nothing beautiful could end
Spanish moss above the driveway
Summer dresses in the wind
Then Savannah turned to darkness
Ancient oaks came crashing down
Mama never saw the morning
And the money wasn't there to be found
Daddy stood among the wreckage
Half his old fire gone
He used to tell me
Money goes
People go
But land holds on
After the storm
I had nothing but the ground
So I wrapped both hands around it
And I swore I'd hold it down
Let the bright things disappear
Let the easy life be gone
You can lose almost everything
And still have something to stand on
I wore my best to Charleston
Like silk could hide the need
He smiled behind the glass and said
You didn't come for me
His money frozen, freedom gone
He couldn't buy me time
But he saw the steel beneath the charm
And recognized his kind
A scoundrel knows a scoundrel
He liked what others feared
I left with empty hands that night
And one thing crystal clear
No one was coming
After the storm
I had nothing but the ground
So I wrapped both hands around it
And I swore I'd hold it down
Let the bright things disappear
Let the easy life be gone
You can lose almost everything
And still have something to stand on
So I married something steady
Just enough to buy me time
Built one store into another
Learned the contract, learned the lie
Daddy left me before he saw
How hard his girl became
Then another black dress, flowers
And Charleston came again
He never wanted innocence
He knew I had no use for it
He liked the hunger in my blood
Because his own ran through it
Two gamblers at the same table
Neither one afraid to lose
And when he held his hand out
I already knew I'd choose
After the storm
I stopped asking who would save me
Turned the fear into a fire
Let the hard years remake me
I saved the land
I raised the walls
Made the family name my own
But I still feel the weather changing
Long before the clouds roll on
Money goes
People go
But beneath those Savannah oaks
The land holds on
