Chana Dal Coconut Curry | Kerala-Style Kadala Curry | Easy Homemade Recipe Enjoy this delicious homemade chana dal curry made with overnight-soaked chana dal, freshly roasted coconut, aromatic spices, and a flavourful onion-tomato base. The roasted coconut masala gives this curry a rich taste, beautiful colour, and thick gravy. It pairs perfectly with puttu, appam, dosa, chapati, or rice! Ingredients Chana dal Turmeric powder Salt Fresh grated coconut Chilli powder Coriander powder Oil Mustard seeds Curry leaves Crushed ginger and garlic Green chillies Onion Tomato Garam masala Water as needed Preparation Method 1. Soak and cook the chana dal Wash the chana dal thoroughly and soak it in water overnight for 8–9 hours. In the morning, drain the soaked water and transfer the chana dal to a pressure cooker. Add fresh water, turmeric powder, and salt. Pressure-cook on medium flame for around 6–8 whistles, or until the chana dal is cooked well. The cooking time may vary depending on the pressure cooker and the quality of the chana dal. 2. Prepare the roasted coconut masala Heat a pan and dry-roast the fresh grated coconut until it turns dark golden brown. Add chilli powder, turmeric powder, and coriander powder. Roast for a few more seconds on low flame, taking care not to burn the spices. Allow the mixture to cool completely, then grind it in a mixer jar without adding water initially. The natural oils released from the roasted coconut help bring the mixture together. 3. Prepare the curry base Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter. Add curry leaves, crushed ginger and garlic, and slit green chillies. Sauté for a few seconds until aromatic. 4. Cook the onions and tomatoes Add chopped onions and sauté until they become soft. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy. 5. Combine the chana dal and coconut masala Add the cooked chana dal along with its cooking water to the onion-tomato mixture. Add the prepared roasted coconut masala and mix everything well. Add a little extra water if needed to adjust the consistency of the gravy. 6. Simmer until flavourful Once the curry starts boiling, add garam masala and mix well. Cover the kadai and simmer for 10–15 minutes, allowing the flavours to blend and the gravy to thicken. 7. Serve hot Once the curry reaches your desired consistency, switch off the flame and serve hot. Enjoy this rich and flavourful chana dal coconut curry with your favourite breakfast or meal!
