Why tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea run so deep | Mapped Out

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has again demanded Red Sea access for his landlocked country, just after being sworn for a new term in office. Abiy’s insistence is causing tensions to flare up with its neighbor and long-term enemy, Eritrea. The demand comes amidst a sharp escalation in deadly fighting in the northernmost region of Ethiopia, Tigray. Rebel fighters from the TPLF, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, have clashed with the Ethiopian military. Air attacks have killed dozens in the Tigray region. Rebel forces have now temporarily withdrawn the regional capital Mekelle. The fighting threatens the 2022 peace agreement that ended a devastating two-year war. There are fears the conflict could spill over into the rest of Ethiopia or even the wider Horn of Africa region. Ethiopia accuses its neighbors Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supported the armed opposition. All three countries deny this. A separate dispute over Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River has further strained relations with Egypt and Sudan, which rely on the river for water.
