Fifteen minutes of box breathing on a quiet beach in Lofoten, Norway – small waves rolling onto golden sand beneath steep green cliffs. Four equal steps to settle the mind and sharpen your focus. 4-4-4-4 is the classic starting point.
Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4 – about 4 breaths per minute. A soft, higher singing bowl rings through the in-breath, a deeper bowl through the out-breath, and both holds are silent. On screen the square fills as you breathe in and settles as you breathe out, while a small light travels around its edge – one side for each step. Beneath the tones, small waves keep rolling in and out. Follow with eyes open or closed.

How to practise
– Sit comfortably with your back straight.
– Higher tone: breathe in quietly through the nose (4 s).
– Silence: hold gently with the lungs full, throat soft (4 s).
– Lower tone: breathe out slowly through the nose, or softly through parted lips (4 s).
– Silence: rest with the lungs empty until the next tone (4 s).
– Never strain. If a hold feels too long, shorten it and rejoin on the next tone.
Which box is right for me?
4-4-4-4 is the classic starting point. After a week or two, many people move on to 5-5-5-5, and later to 6-6-6-6. All three are on this beach (5-5-5-5 and 6-6-6-6 in the Box Breathing playlist). Choose the one that feels calm, not effortful.
The same box sessions are also on the channel beside a forest stream, a forest river and an alpine lake.
Why box breathing?
Box breathing – also called square breathing, or sama vritti in yoga – is used by athletes, first responders and the military to stay calm under pressure. In a Stanford study (Balban et al., 2023), five minutes a day for a month improved mood and reduced anxiety, much like other slow breathing practices.
Please note
A little light-headedness can occur at first – stop and breathe normally if it does. Do not practise while driving, in water or anywhere you need full attention. If you are pregnant, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma, or have recently had heart or eye surgery, leave out the holds and simply breathe in and out for 4 seconds each – or talk to your doctor first.
