SONG KUL to KEL SUU LAKE — one of the most challenging and spectacular road trips in Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬
In this video, we leave the incredible Song Kul Lake and begin a long journey toward the remote Kel Suu Lake, deep in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan.
The drive takes around 8–9 hours, with a stop in Naryn for lunch, before continuing deeper into the mountains toward the remote Kok-Kiya Valley.
This is not an easy road trip. The route includes long stretches of rough and unpaved mountain roads, and a high-clearance 4x4 SUV is strongly recommended for this journey. Road conditions can change with weather, mud and river crossings, so this is definitely not the kind of road where you want to arrive with the wrong vehicle. Recent travel information likewise describes the approach toward Kok-Kiya/Kel-Suu as genuine off-road terrain where 4x4 access is important.
🏔️ SONG KUL LAKE
Song Kul is one of Kyrgyzstan's iconic high-altitude destinations, surrounded by enormous mountain landscapes and summer pastures where nomadic families stay in traditional yurts.
From the peaceful scenery of Song Kul, our journey takes us east toward Naryn and then into increasingly remote territory.
🍜 STOPPING IN NARYN
After hours on the road, we stop in Naryn for lunch and a short break before continuing toward the mountains.
Naryn is an important staging point for travelers heading toward the remote Kel Suu region, where supplies, fuel and other essentials become much harder to find.
⛰️ KOK-KIYA VALLEY
As we leave Naryn behind, the landscape becomes wilder and the roads become much more challenging.
Our destination for the night is Kok-Kiya Valley, a remote high-altitude valley on the way to Kel Suu. Instead of trying to reach the lake in one exhausting day, we spend the night here in a yurt and prepare for the next day's journey.
Kok-Kiya is more than just a stop on the route — the valley itself is an incredible part of the Kyrgyzstan experience. Yurt camps in the valley are commonly used as a base before continuing toward Kel Suu.
🏞️ KEL SUU LAKE
The next morning, we continue toward Kel Suu Lake, one of the most remote and dramatic lakes in Kyrgyzstan.
Located at roughly 3,500 metres above sea level, Kel Suu is surrounded by enormous mountain and canyon walls near the Chinese border. Access is controlled and requires the appropriate border-zone authorization; the final approach is also generally completed on foot or horseback rather than simply driving directly to the lake.
This is one of those places where the journey is almost as important as the destination.
From Song Kul → Naryn → Kok-Kiya Valley → Kel Suu Lake, this is our journey through some of the wildest landscapes in Kyrgyzstan.
