Britney Spears – Britney (2001): a deep dive into the album everyone still calls transitional, and why they're right to. The Neptunes, the two songs Janet Jackson turned down, I'm a Slave 4 U, Overprotected, a text message from Justin Timberlake, and how Justified got called brave a year later for the same move. 25th Anniversary Edition, with She'll Never Be Me, out 6 November 2026. In January 2001 Britney Spears was 19 and had the biggest first week any woman had ever had behind her, 1.3 million copies of Oops!... I Did It Again in seven days. By February she had a Pepsi deal worth seven to eight million dollars, and she was living with Justin Timberlake. She also had one writing credit across two albums, Dear Diary, a diary entry about a boy, because nearly everything else came out of Max Martin's studio in Stockholm. So she asked Jive for the Neptunes, who had made records for Jay-Z and Ol' Dirty Bastard and never one for a teen pop act. There was an arena tour, a Pepsi contract and a feature film all built on the old sound, and the job was to change what she was without losing the people who'd been there since ...Baby One More Time. Jive had a 1.3 million first week to protect and every reason to say no, and Jive said yes. What came back was I'm a Slave 4 U, which Janet Jackson had turned down that spring along with Boys, seven songs of her own, all about being told what to do, and Overprotected, which is Janet's Control all over again: a famous daughter telling the adults to back off. I was in the sixth form when the I'm a Slave 4 U video came out and thought it was bold and filthy, and I still think both. What I couldn't see from there was what the year was costing her. She launched the single at the VMAs on the 6th of September 2001 with a python across her shoulders, three weeks before there was a song in the shops, and her own account of it is "have I lost my mind? What am I doing with a snake?" Five days later it was September the 11th. Jive put the single out in America as a 12-inch with no CD single to buy, it peaked at 27, the first lead single of her career to miss the top 10, and the album still did 745,750 copies in its first week. Then in March 2002, somewhere inside a 23-hour shoot for the Overprotected remix video, Justin ended the relationship by text message. She read it in her trailer between takes, went back out and danced, finished the four months of tour she was contracted to, and went home to Kentwood. On the 5th of November 2002 Jive put out Justified, with the Neptunes on seven of its 13 tracks, the reviews reached for Off the Wall, the Cry Me a River video put a Britney look-alike in his ex's house, and it won the Grammy she'd lost the year before. He'd co-written and sung on the closing track of her album and lived with her while she made the rest of it. Her account of that winter: "I was comatose in Louisiana, and he was happily running around Hollywood." She made the Michael Jackson move a year before he did, on the same label, with a tour, a Pepsi contract and a film riding on it, and got told she was a bad example for her trouble. He made it with no sound to abandon and got called the new king of pop. The album is still called transitional, and it is, because it's where she started pushing for control of her own music and didn't stop. I'd just like people to stop saying it as if it were an insult.
