He could have enjoyed a stable and comfortable life, but instead chose to join the independence movement, working alongside Ahn Chang-ho as a member of Shinminhoe. After fleeing to China to escape Japanese persecution, he opened hospitals where he treated Korean independence activists and soldiers. He donated most of the hospitals’ earnings to fund the independence army and sought to establish a military academy and a base for the independence movement by relocating Korean families to the region.
