Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, travelled to Moscow and returned with major announcements: a visa-waiver agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders, doubled Russian scholarships for Ghanaian students, discussions on nuclear power, trade, investment and security, and Russia’s offer to help repair relations between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States. But behind these opportunities is a painful issue Ghana cannot ignore. Sixty-two Ghanaians have reportedly died after becoming involved in Russia’s war against Ukraine, while another 15 remain missing. Ghana says some were lured through fraudulent employment opportunities and illegally enlisted. Russia says the Ghanaians signed contracts with its Ministry of Defence. So who recruited them?
