Edison No. 1 Steam Locomotive in Action | Greenfield Village Railroad | The Henry Ford
Spend the day following the historic Edison No. 1 steam locomotive as it hauls passenger trains around Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. Experience beautiful runbys, station stops, whistle echoes, steam action, and close-up views of one of America's most unique operating steam locomotives.
Originally built around 1870 as a compact 0-4-0 switch engine by the Manchester Locomotive Works, the locomotive was purchased by Henry Ford in 1932. Ford had it rebuilt into the distinctive 4-4-0 "American" wheel arrangement at the Rouge Shops and named it "Edison" in honor of his longtime friend, Thomas Edison. Today, it remains one of the signature operating steam locomotives at Greenfield Village.
The Greenfield Village Railroad is a 2.5-mile standard-gauge loop that circles Greenfield Village, carrying visitors through one of America's premier living history museums. The railroad connects historic districts featuring authentic buildings, working farms, skilled craftspeople, and exhibits celebrating American innovation. Along with Edison No. 1, the railroad also operates several other historic steam locomotives, making every visit unique.
