Sometimes You Shouldn't Ask for Help | iRacing ARCA at Charlotte

Charlotte Motor Speedway and I have never exactly been friends. After discovering that my microphone had mysteriously muted itself during my first attempt at recording this week's ARCA race, I got the privilege of doing the whole thing again. Charlotte is probably my weakest 1.5-mile track, and qualifying 12th did very little to change my opinion of the place. An early accident gave me an opportunity to pick up some positions, but as the race settled down, so did my progress. I eventually reached the point where I realized there probably wasn't much more forward progress available unless something happened to the cars ahead of me. So naturally, I started hoping for another wreck. Apparently, karma was listening. I got exactly what I asked for—just considerably closer to home than I would've preferred. Fortunately, several other drivers had an even worse time getting through the resulting chaos, and despite everything, I managed to salvage a 10th-place finish. Not every race is going to be a fight for the win. Sometimes recognizing what the car—and the driver—are capable of that day, minimizing the damage, and bringing home the best result available is its own kind of success. And sometimes the lesson is considerably simpler: Be careful what you wish for.
