Amtrak Crescent Blows A Turbo. While crossing the causeway over Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Slidell, Louisiana, during the morning of August 21, 2021, Amtrak Train 20 (Crescent) blew a turbocharger. A "blown turbocharger" occurs when the turbo stops forcing adequate pressurized air into the cylinders. Without enough air, the diesel engine runs extremely rich, burning fuel incompletely and producing thick, dark smoke. With GE P42DCs 41 and 88 leading the normal consist, the train continued to Slidell Station. Note: The caption and title are based on the best information available at the time of publication. Since then, some have suggested that the smoke was produced by throttle manipulation.
