A fresh take on one of the most loved melodies in the repertoire. This arrangement of Londonderry Air wraps the famous tune in warm, jazz-influenced harmonies and richly coloured chord progressions, giving familiar material a new character without losing its heart.
Some settings of this melody open with a restrained first verse, then pile on volume and density for the second. This one takes a different approach. The harmonic language stays consistent from the first bar to the last, but the treatment never repeats: new textures, fresh voicings and shifting colours keep the tune sounding new each time it returns. The first verse is in A♭ major, modulating to F major for the second verse and climax, with an optional high B in Trumpet 1 for bands that want an extra thrill at the top.
Woodwind and brass sections each have their own a cappella passages, so every part of the band gets a moment to shine while building blend, tuning and phrasing. Cued notes help bands with incomplete instrumentation. This Grade 3 arrangement is accessible to developing ensembles while still sounding sophisticated, and it works well as a lyrical feature in any concert program.
