Observation is the foundation of the observe, assess and plan cycle in early years practice. This lesson explains why practitioners need clear evidence of what children say, do and show before deciding how to support their development. You will learn the difference between intentional observation, which has a clear purpose, and systematic observation, which is organised and consistent. The lesson also explores why observations should take place in children’s natural environments, such as play areas and outdoor spaces, where they can act comfortably. Using Sarah’s observations of Liam building with blocks, it shows how detailed records can reveal milestones, interests, strengths and areas needing support. You will then see how observations inform assessment, activity planning and interventions, such as encouraging turn-taking. Finally, the lesson explains how ongoing observations help practitioners review progress, evaluate strategies and adjust support. The key message is simple: effective, personalised planning begins with careful, deliberate observation.
