The future of a nation is shaped long before its leaders take office, build institutions or make decisions of consequence. It begins with the education they receive and the kind of human beings that education enables them to become. India’s schools therefore carry a responsibility that extends well beyond academic preparation. At a time when India is increasingly engaging with the world as a major economic, technological and intellectual force, the question of what kind of education will prepare the next generation for that responsibility becomes central.
In Episode 3 of Adi Vidya Dialogues, host Shantanu Prakash, Founder Adi Vidya Foundation & The Millennium Schools is joined by Dr. R. Balasubramaniam, Full-Time Member, NITI Aayog, for a wide-ranging conversation on “Educating the Whole Human: Spirituality, Indian Knowledge Systems and the Future of Indian Schooling.”
The conversation begins with a simple premise: education must develop more than the intellect. A young person may acquire knowledge, skills and qualifications, but leadership also calls for judgement, self-awareness, character, empathy and a sense of responsibility. These dimensions of development are often difficult to measure, yet they profoundly influence how individuals use the knowledge and opportunities they acquire. This leads to a deeper exploration of Indian Knowledge Systems and the idea of educating the whole human being.
India’s intellectual traditions have long engaged with questions that modern education often places outside the classroom - questions of purpose, consciousness, ethics, self-mastery, duty and the relationship between individual fulfilment and the larger good. How might these ideas speak to the education of a young Indian today? Not as something to be preserved in a textbook, but as a living intellectual inheritance that can inform how we think about learning, leadership and human development.
The conversation also considers the place of spirituality in education - not as the teaching of a particular faith, but as an invitation to develop inner awareness, purpose and a deeper understanding of one’s responsibilities. This becomes especially significant when we think about the leaders India will need in the decades ahead. The students entering our schools today will eventually occupy positions across every sphere of society - science and technology, business, public administration, research, education, culture, entrepreneurship and public life. Their education will influence not only what they are capable of doing but how they understand the responsibility that comes with that capability.
There is also a civilisational dimension to this responsibility. India’s young people are inheriting an extraordinary body of knowledge accumulated across centuries. To be a custodian of that inheritance does not mean simply looking backwards. It means developing the confidence and discernment to understand what has been inherited, engage critically with it, and carry its most meaningful insights into an entirely new era.
That requires students who are both rooted and open, capable and curious, ambitious and responsible.
