In 1803, seventy-five enslaved Igbo people chose to walk into a Georgia creek rather than live in bondage — an act of resistance that became the legend of the Flying Africans. Two centuries later, DNA science, old shipping ledgers, and a word for okra are all pointing back to the same story: one of the most significant and most deliberately erased ethnic origins in African-American history.
This video traces how people from the Bight of Biafra, most of them Igbo, were funneled disproportionately into colonial Virginia and Maryland, how their language and customs survived in fragments for three hundred years, and what actually happened at Igbo Landing. We also break down where the viral "60% of Black Americans have Igbo ancestry" claim really comes from — it's a historian's genealogical estimate, not a DNA study — and look at what real genetic research, including a landmark 2023 study on remains from Catoctin Furnace, Maryland, actually shows about Igbo and Congo ancestry in living African-Americans today.
