🎙️ Behind the Uniform | Episode 10 I Leaving Work at Work: Why Your Shift Sometimes Comes Home With You You’ve finished your shift. You’ve handed over. You’ve changed. You’ve driven home. Technically, you’ve left work. Except your brain apparently didn’t get the memo. 😂 You’re making dinner and suddenly think: “Did I actually document that?” You’re in the shower replaying a conversation from six hours ago. You’re lying in bed wondering how that patient is doing. Or your brain decides that 2:37am is the perfect time to conduct a full clinical governance review of your entire working day. In Episode 10 of Behind the Uniform, Gem and I talk about leaving work at work ,why healthcare can be so difficult to mentally switch off from, what actually helps us recover, and why this isn’t always simply a case of having better boundaries. We get into: 🧠 Psychological detachment from work — what it means and why recovery matters 🔁 The difference between useful reflection and getting stuck in rumination 🩺 Why handing over responsibility doesn’t always mean your brain feels like it has handed it over too 🚗 Gem’s idea of the “Third Space” — that bit between work and home where we transition from healthcare-professional mode back into ourselves 🎧 Why a commute, music, a shower, walking the dog or sitting in the car staring into the middle distance for ten minutes might actually serve a purpose 😂 💭 Why some shifts genuinely do follow us home 📱 How email, phones and blurred work-home boundaries can make switching off harder 🏥 Why organisations can’t tell staff to “switch off” while creating workloads and cultures that make switching off almost impossible Leaving work at work doesn’t mean you don’t care. It doesn’t mean difficult experiences suddenly stop affecting you the moment your shift ends. It means recognising what needs reflecting on, what genuinely needs processing… and what you are allowed to put down until tomorrow. Because you don’t owe healthcare every thought you have. Recovery is part of being able to come back and do the job again tomorrow. Because behind every uniform is a human being. 💙 📚 EVIDENCE & FURTHER READING Psychological detachment from work – systematic review A 2023 systematic review of 159 studies found psychological detachment to be an important recovery experience linked with employee wellbeing, health and work outcomes. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37141... Recovery Experience Questionnaire – Sonnentag & Fritz This work identifies four key recovery experiences: psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery and control. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17638... Recovery, sleep and next-day wellbeing Research has linked lower evening detachment with greater fatigue and negative activation the following morning. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18457... Work-home boundaries and technology Research suggests work-related technology use at home can make psychological detachment more difficult. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21728... The drive home? Walking the dog? Music? The gym? Changing out of your uniform? Or sitting in the car outside your house for ten minutes before anyone realises you’re home? 😂 #BehindTheUniform #Healthcare #HealthcareWorkers #StaffWellbeing #WorkLifeBalance #PatientSafety #ClinicalGovernance
