🌱 Evening Descending Mercy — BG 13.17 — Under the Shower of Causeless Mercy: Hearing, Depending, and Belonging to Vṛndāvana — 09/21/2026 There is something so soothing, so loving, and so merciful about this Guru-tattva. Bhakti is simply the merciful, causeless glance of the Bhagavatam. Without the loving and causeless mercy of the Bhagavatas, there is no bhakti that can happen. Even if it is bhakti-aparādha or bhakti-āsa, there is no bhakti that will truly happen without the loving, causeless mercy of the Bhagavatas. Sadhu-Guru is like a cloud pouring down the mercy of Krishna, saving the whole world from drying up in the desert of material existence. He is always with Krishna, full of Krishna—nothing but Krishna, Krishna, Krishna. He is Rādhikā-priya-sakhī, a dear associate of Krishna and Rādhikā, and Krishna-kṛpā-śrī-mūrti. That is Śrīla Prabhupāda and our Guru-janas. They so lovingly carry Śrīla Prabhupāda in their hearts and live for Śrīla Prabhupāda. They want to give us Śrīla Prabhupāda and Śrī Rādhā-Śyāma through their own lives. Whom else can we look up to? Where else can we go for shelter other than this very soothing, loving, and causeless mercy? We are never anātha. We are never without shelter. As we pray in Guruvāṣṭakam: Saṁsāra-dāvānala-līḍha-loka- trāṇāya kāruṇya-ghanāghanatvam… vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam. Śrī Guru is like a dense cloud of mercy, showering the waters of Krishna upon the world. And then we hear: Mahāprabhoḥ kīrtana-nṛtya-gīta- vāditra-mādyan-manaso narāṇām… The mind becomes absorbed in the chanting, dancing, singing, and glorification of Mahāprabhu. Again and again, we are brought to the lotus feet of Śrī Guru. The Guruvāṣṭakam prayers, the Guru-vandanā, the Tulasi prayers, Śrī Śikṣāṣṭakam of Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, and Śrī Harināma—all of this is like a daily dose of spiritual nourishment. How can we sustain ourselves in bhakti without this? How wonderful it is that we are assured that we can receive this nourishment every day. Śrīla Prabhupāda gave us this mercy. The Acharyas have blessed us to hear all of this during brahma-muhūrta. Let it go inside. Let it settle within you. Then you will be ready to sustain whatever may come every day. Prabhupāda-bandhu, this is not a one-time thing. Bhakti has to be filled within us every day. Otherwise, we become like dead people walking around—externally moving, but internally not nourished by Krishna. Vāñchā-kalpa-tarubhyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca, patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ. All the Vaiṣṇavas are like desire-fulfilling trees. They are very dear to Bhagavan. We bow down to all the Vaiṣṇavas, take the dust from their lotus feet, place it upon our heads, and dance in joy. Vaiṣṇavera pā-dhuli tāhe mora snāna-keli, tarpana mora vaiṣṇave nāma-dhana mora… nityānanda-pati mora, gauracandra prāṇa mora, yugala-kiśora. Just by doing this one thing—just by hearing these morning prayers every day—our devotion is nourished and sustained. We are already hearing about the Bhagavatas and about Bhagavan, and the service will naturally flow from there. Then we pray to Tulasi Devī: Vṛndāyai tulasī-devyai priyāyai keśavasya ca, kṛṣṇa-bhakti-prade devi satyavatyai namo namaḥ. Tulasī kṛṣṇa-preyasi namo namaḥ. Rādhā-kṛṣṇa-sevā pāo ei abhilāṣī. We are waking up to the fact that we belong to this grove of Vṛndāvana. We belong here. The descending mercy will bring us here. We pray: “O Vṛndāvana-vāsī, please fulfill this desire. Please give me residence in the kuñjas. Please give me the service of Rādhā and Govinda. Please give me the adhikāra to become a sakhī-anugatā and serve Them. Please make me Your maidservant.” Is this all really possible for me? With so many impurities within me, will I be able to do this? But that is not what the Tulasi-vinati and these morning prayers are about. This is all about descending mercy. Descending mercy means that the mercy itself will make whatever is being prayed for happen within us. So just hear, hear, hear, and hear. Every day, drink this assurance. Drink this assurance and remain under the shower of this causeless mercy. That is all we have to do. Everything else is done by this mercy. Please do not squeeze the mind or intelligence as if we are going to accomplish everything in bhakti by our own effort. It is not going to happen that way. No squeezing of the mind. No depending on this crippled intelligence. Just remain under these showers of mercy. Remain under this rainfall of mercy, and the mercy will take care of everything. Very short reflections: Śrī Guru is the cloud of Krishna’s causeless mercy. Hearing the prayers daily nourishes and sustains bhakti. We belong to the world of Vṛndāvana and loving service. Our effort is to hear, receive, and remain under the shower of mercy. Everything else is accomplished by descending mercy. 🙏🙏
