Beside the Avon River in Christchurch lies 600 hectares of green land with roads and streetlights but not a single house. After the 2011 earthquake the government bought more than 5,000 homes there and pulled them all down — an area three and a half times the size of Hagley Park.\n\nThis video flies over a 3D model of Christchurch built from real aerial imagery, elevation and LiDAR buildings, always facing north, with the 1850 town plan, old photographs and archive pictures from the quakes: its setting between the plains, the volcanoes and the Alps, an English city drawn on paper, the two earthquakes and the red zone, the centre rebuilt over fifteen years, what the city lives on, and where to live — and what to check before you buy.\n\nHouse values are September 2026 averages; check the land's liquefaction category (TC1/TC2/TC3) and current prices before you buy.\n\nMusic:\n'Reawakening' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au\n'Castles in the Sky' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au\n'Hiraeth' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au\n'The Long Dark' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au\n'Passage of Time' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au\n'Simplicity' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au
