VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP both find things in a spreadsheet, and both are worth knowing. But they don't behave the same way — and in one of these seven situations VLOOKUP gets the answer wrong without showing an error, a warning, or anything at all. We put both through the jobs a lookup actually gets asked to do at work, side by side on the same product catalogue. Chapters: 0:00 — What we're comparing, and how each formula is built 1:26 — 1. Counting columns vs pointing at them 2:20 — 2. Looking left: the one VLOOKUP structurally cannot do 3:04 — 3. The silent break — a column moves and the answer changes 4:28 — 4. Handling a missing value without wrapping it in IFERROR 5:14 — 5. Returning a whole row with one formula 5:49 — 6. Getting the LATEST match instead of the first 6:38 — 7. Discount bands, and the sorted-data assumption that bites 7:46 — The scoreboard, and when VLOOKUP is still the right call Chapter 3 is the one to watch. A column gets added, VLOOKUP's hardcoded column number quietly points somewhere else, and the cell goes from £189 to £40 — still formatted as currency, still looking like a perfectly sensible price. No error. That is the whole argument for XLOOKUP in one screen.
