EP 01: What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer? FDE Roadmap & Role Explained

Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) explained: the role at Palantir, OpenAI and Anthropic, the skills, and the roadmap. OpenAI, Anthropic and AWS are all hiring for a role most software engineers have never applied for: the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE). In this first episode of FDE Journey, we break down what an FDE actually does, where the role came from, how it differs from a software engineer and a solutions architect, and why generative AI made it one of the fastest-growing jobs in tech. FDE Journey is a step-by-step roadmap from zero to Forward Deployed Engineer. Every episode explains one concept simply, with everyday examples, and ends with interview questions you should be ready for. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 The AI job most engineers miss 0:40 The last-mile problem 1:22 What is a Forward Deployed Engineer? 2:09 Where the role came from: Palantir to AI labs 2:49 SWE vs Solutions Architect vs FDE 3:54 What FDEs actually do: the work loop 4:58 Why generative AI needs FDEs 5:46 Is the FDE role for you? 6:19 Recap and what's next 📚 Sources • FDE job postings up 800%+ (Jan–Sep 2025, Indeed data reported by the Financial Times): https://www.storyboard18.com/digital/... • OpenAI, Anthropic and AWS building embedded engineering teams: https://hrexecutive.com/aws-joins-ope... • The Pragmatic Engineer on forward deployed engineering: https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/th... • Palantir on "Deltas" (its forward deployed engineers): https://blog.palantir.com/dev-versus-... • FDE vs Solutions Architect: https://www.tryexponent.com/blog/forw... ▶️ Next episode: AI vs Machine Learning vs Deep Learning, explained simply. 💬 Which part of the FDE role are you most curious about?
