Fueling Freedom in Finland {Forging the Sampo}

I had a wonderful time in Finland. Thank you Viko for the gracious hospitality. Finland is riddled with magical lore. Its right in front of the face of one who can feel beneath the veil. A country with pristine nature and salt of the earth people. There is a level of groundedness the average Finn has that is incomparable to the standard American/Westerner. Finns know how to enjoy themselves (when it isn't winter time). The circadian changes that happen that far north force a difference in culture that is deeply embedded into everything they do. "Winter is coming" is always something in the back of the mind of a Finn. When looking at their sauna practices, its apparent they are using them for something so much more than health/longevity. The sauna is a place to rest/relax and enjoy time within community. It is also a great leveling field. You could be with the prime minister of Finland and he would invite you for a sauna. In the sauna, you are equal for the great spirit Löyly is poured into the sauna to become a part of you. When I was first invited to sauna, the question "are you okay going naked" was asked. My american mind started to come up with all kinds of neuroses then I just let them go. It was great to see how far removed Finnish culture is from sexualizing every little detail about society. There is no hierarchy in a sauna, and from the deep ancestral practices, some were born there, and some died there. Finland was deeply restorative for me.
