#Congress #Tariffs #Canada On the twelfth of February, the United States House of Representatives voted two hundred and nineteen to two hundred and eleven to repeal the tariffs on Canada. Six Republicans crossed the aisle to do it. That vote only reached the floor because those members had already gone against their own leadership twice. The Speaker of the House had kept the resolution off the floor since it was introduced in March of the previous year, and a separate procedural vote was needed to force it into the chamber. As the count closed, the President posted that any Republican in the House or the Senate who voted against tariffs would seriously suffer the consequences come election time, and that this included primaries. One of the six was asked about it by a reporter that night. He said a lot of Canadian-owned businesses are in his district and they hire a lot of people, that he had looked at the Constitution, and that it was not easy but it was the right thing. Asked whether he feared the President's anger, he said we'll see. And this was not the first time. The Senate had already passed the same kind of resolution twice — in April of twenty twenty-five, by fifty-one votes to forty-eight, and again that October. You can hear both roll calls in this video. Every one of those votes was argued on the same ground, and it was not about Canada. It was about who is allowed to levy a tax. The Speaker's own answer is in here too, and so is the argument that none of it will change anything. Every clip is timestamped and every source is linked below. #Congress #Tariffs #Canada #TradeWar #Constitution #RollCall #USPolitics #Trade
