SIX THINGS THEY SAY RIGHT BEFORE YOU'RE SCREWED: the sentences that move a deal against you, and the line that gets you out of it. Free, no email needed to read it: https://beforeyousign.streetsmartbusi...
Wu-Tang Clan walked into the music business as nine broke guys from Staten Island and split a 60,000 dollar advance between all of them. On paper it looked like they got robbed. They did not. RZA traded the big check for one clause nobody had ever pulled off: every member stayed a free agent who could sign his own solo deal at any other label and carry the Wu-Tang name with him. Within a few years the members were recording for 5 of the 6 major labels at the same time, and not one of those labels owned Wu-Tang. They turned the whole industry into their marketing department.
Then they did it again. They did not license the W to somebody else's company, they owned it. Wu Wear started with 1,000 dollars and did about 10.8 million dollars in gross sales by 1997. And they did it a third time with a secret album pressed as a single copy and sold as one-of-one art for about 2 million dollars. Record deal, clothing brand, scarcity itself, three different arenas, the same decision every time. Do not be the face of it. Be the owner of it.
Kanye had all the leverage and rented his name to a company that owned the machine. Wu-Tang had no leverage and built the machine anyway. Rent versus own, told two ways.
In this episode:
How a 60,000 dollar advance bought more ownership than a million dollar deal
The free agent clause that put Wu-Tang on five of the six major labels
Why the slow burn of 36 Chambers proves owning beats renting
Wu Wear: turning a logo into a company they owned
The one copy album and the 88 year clause
The one lesson: own your name before you sell a single thing
