Toa Payoh is Singapore’s pioneer "model" housing estate. Translating to “Big Swamp” in Hokkien, it was Singapore's first satellite town built by the Housing & Development Board (HDB). It boasts many of the nation's "firsts," including housing the first NTUC supermarket, the first MRT station, and the iconic dragon playground Toa Payoh's history traces its evolution from a swampy agricultural settlement into Singapore's first self-contained satellite town planned entirely by the Housing and Development Board (HDB).
