[The Emorho Festival (also spelled Em’orho or Emoro) is the centuries-old, sacred New Yam Festival celebrated within the Benin Kingdom of Edo State, and observed by communities sharing ancestral ties across the region, including parts of Delta State. Reintroduced to its full, historic grandeur by His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, the festival serves as a massive cultural thanksgiving to the supreme deity (Osanobua), the ancestors, and the earth for a bountiful harvest and food security.
The celebration is deeply symbolic; no native is permitted to eat the newly harvested crop until the monarch performs the official rituals. The festival takes place around August to October (the 11th lunar month). It begins strictly after the Ague, a sacred 14-day period of rigorous fasting, prayer, and seclusion by the Oba to purify the kingdom. Once the new yams are ushered into the royal palace, the Oba cuts and tastes the first yam, officially declaring the harvest open for all. The Benin palace comes alive with spectacular cultural displays, where high-ranking chiefs elegantly twirl the Eben (ceremonial swords), vibrant traditional music plays, and massive community feasts feature Ema (pounded yam) served with goat and bush meat to promote deep social solidarity.
