walk around Vienna’s famous Academy of Fine Arts and Schillerplatz, through a neighbourhood shaped by art, architecture and imperial history – with an unavoidable historical footnote: this is the academy that twice rejected the young Adolf Hitler. 📜 Description This film takes us on another walk through central Vienna, this time around the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna – Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien – and the elegant streets surrounding Schillerplatz. The Academy occupies one of the monumental buildings created during Vienna's great 19th-century transformation. The building faces Schillerplatz, an elegant green square dominated by the monument to the German poet and dramatist Friedrich Schiller. Around it stand imposing late-19th-century buildings typical of the Vienna that developed when the medieval fortifications were removed and the Ringstrasse district was created. The neighbourhood is particularly interesting because several different Viennas meet here. Its most famous treasure, however, is Hieronymus Bosch's extraordinary Last Judgment Triptych, painted around the beginning of the 16th century. Filled with fantastic creatures, demons, tortured bodies and surreal landscapes, it is one of the great Bosch paintings outside the Netherlands and Spain. The Academy also occupies a peculiar place in 20th-century history because of a student who never studied there. In 1907, the eighteen-year-old Adolf Hitler applied for admission. He passed the preliminary selection but was rejected after the entrance examination. He applied again in 1908 and was rejected without being admitted to the examination stage. His surviving drawings demonstrated some ability in architectural representation but were judged insufficient in the depiction of human figures. The episode later acquired enormous historical fascination because Hitler subsequently spent difficult years in Vienna before moving to Munich and eventually entering politics. There is, of course, no meaningful sense in which the Academy "caused" what followed. Nevertheless, the story has made this otherwise ordinary episode in an unsuccessful young artist's life one of the most famous rejected art-school applications in history. Walking around the Academy today, however, reveals something much broader than this notorious footnote. This is a neighbourhood created during the extraordinary expansion of imperial Vienna in the second half of the 19th century. Monumental façades stand beside quieter residential streets. Small gardens interrupt rows of elaborate historicist buildings, while the great cultural institutions of the Ringstrasse remain only minutes away. Schillerplatz itself provides a particularly attractive pause in the urban landscape. The statue of Schiller stands among trees and paths, facing the Academy and recalling the enormous importance attached to literature, music and visual art in the culture of German-speaking Central Europe. The Academy remains a functioning art university rather than simply a historic monument. Students continue to work here, maintaining a tradition of artistic education extending back more than three centuries. Our film explores the Academy from the outside and through its surrounding neighbourhood, allowing the architecture and streets to tell the story. It is another side of Vienna: less immediately spectacular than the Hofburg or Schönbrunn, perhaps, but full of connections between art, literature, architecture and European history. And, as so often in Vienna, an apparently simple walk around a few streets becomes a journey through several centuries. 🧭 Keywords Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, Vienna Academy walk, Vienna walking tour, Schillerplatz Vienna, Schiller monument Vienna, Theophil Hansen, Vienna art academy, Vienna art history, Vienna architecture, Vienna historic streets, Ringstrasse Vienna, historic Vienna, imperial Vienna, Habsburg Vienna, Vienna 19th century, Vienna art museums, Gemäldegalerie Vienna, Bosch Last Judgment Vienna, Hieronymus Bosch Vienna, Academy paintings gallery Vienna, Adolf Hitler Vienna, Hitler art school, Hitler Academy Vienna, Hitler rejected art school, Vienna before World War I, Karlsplatz Vienna, Vienna State Opera, Vienna city walk, walking Vienna, Vienna Austria, Austria travel, Vienna sightseeing, hidden Vienna, cultural Vienna, Vienna travel film, Vienna travel documentary, Wien Akademie, Wien Schillerplatz, Wien walking tour, Wiedeń spacer, Akademia Sztuk Pięknych Wiedeń, Wiedeń Austria #️⃣ Hashtags #Vienna #Wien #AcademyOfFineArts #AkademieDerBildendenKünste #Schillerplatz #ViennaWalk #WalkingTour #ViennaArchitecture #ViennaArt #ArtHistory #HieronymusBosch #TheophilHansen #Ringstrasse #HistoricVienna #ImperialVienna #Habsburg #Austria #AustriaTravel #VisitVienna #ExploreVienna #CityWalk #TravelFilm #TravelDocumentary #Wiedeń
