A little history Luss has a history going back around 1,500 years. The area was associated with St Kessog, an Irish missionary who brought Christianity to the area. The village was originally known as Clachan Dhu, meaning roughly “dark village”, because it was shaded by the surrounding hills. The name Luss is associated with the Gaelic lus, meaning “herb”, connected to the legend surrounding St Kessog's grave. The present Luss Parish Church was built in 1875, but the graveyard is much older. It contains stones dating from around the 7th–8th centuries, including an 11th-century Viking hogback stone.
