I stayed at a friend's house recently who had proper blackout blinds. And they genuinely blew my little mind.
Our kids slept until past 8am, which is basically unheard of, and when I woke up I was completely convinced it was still the middle of the night. It was only when I checked my watch that I realised how late it actually was.
Obviously, I came home wanting blackout blinds! 😅
But, as seems to happen quite a lot lately, I also came home with an idea for a sound.
I started wondering whether there could be an audio equivalent. If blackout blinds remove the light that tells our brains morning has arrived, could I build a sound that does something similar for everything our ears are still picking up while we sleep? Cars outside, pipes, doors, birds starting up at an ungodly hour. All those little changes in the night that can find their way through and disturb an otherwise perfectly good sleep.
Basically, could I make blackout blinds for your ears?
That became Sensory Blackout.
I did some digging into auditory masking and, particularly, the way our brains respond to changes in sound rather than simply sound itself. That last bit became important. A perfectly quiet bedroom isn't necessarily useful if a car suddenly passes outside. The contrast between silence and noise is enormous. Give the brain a stable acoustic background, though, and that same interruption has much less contrast to fight against.
So I built this one around three ideas.
DARK SPECTRUM
A deep, low-frequency sound profile with the brighter upper frequencies deliberately reduced, creating a darker and less stimulating overnight sound.
PRECISION MASKING
Carefully shaped frequencies sit across the parts of the spectrum where common environmental sounds tend to break through, helping them blend into the background rather than suddenly demanding attention.
CONTRAST REDUCTION
A stable acoustic layer reduces the difference between the quiet of your bedroom and unexpected sounds during the night, making those changes feel less pronounced.
Then I basically started closing the blinds.
I removed brighter frequencies that felt too exposed, filled the gaps where outside sounds could creep through and kept smoothing everything until very little stood out. The aim wasn't to make the loudest masking noise possible. Quite the opposite. I wanted enough coverage to soften what's happening beyond your bedroom without replacing it with another sound your brain has to deal with.
And that's Sensory Blackout.
I can't promise it'll stop the morning sun coming through your curtains. You'll still need actual blackout blinds for that. But once the lights are out, this is my attempt at doing the same thing for the other half of the equation.
Put it on low, make the room as dark as you can and hopefully the next thing you know, you're checking your watch wondering how on earth it's already morning.
