2027 Honda CR-V: The Compact SUV Benchmark
Highs and Lows
Strengths include family-friendly interior space, responsive handling, and a comfortable ride. Drawbacks include fuel economy that trails some rivals, unhurried acceleration, and the fact that the CR-V Hybrid outperforms it in nearly every way.
Verdict
The Honda CR-V excels in the compact crossover segment, living up to its reputation as a quiet, comfortable, and highly capable family vehicle.
Overview
Unlike many compact crossovers that sacrifice distinction for broad appeal, the CR-V avoids that compromise. It prioritizes comfort and practicality, offering a smooth ride, ample head and legroom for five passengers, and unusually generous cargo space for its class. It also stands out as genuinely enjoyable to drive, a trait often missing in this segment. The 190-hp turbocharged four-cylinder isn't especially powerful but runs smoothly, and the CR-V's well-tuned chassis gives it notably agile handling. A CR-V Hybrid is also available, offering the same strengths with added power and efficiency. For 2027, no major changes are expected following last year's tech update, which introduced a new infotainment system and larger digital gauge cluster.
Pricing
The 2027 Honda CR-V starts at $33,070 and goes up to $37,350 depending on trim and options.
Engine and Performance
The standard powertrain is a 190-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a CVT and either front- or all-wheel drive, used across the LX, EX, and EX-L trims. All CR-V models include hill-descent control, and updated traction-management software improves low-speed off-road capability. Most trims ride on 18-inch wheels. While it lacks the sharper handling of the Mazda CX-50 or Volkswagen Tiguan, the CR-V delivers a smooth, engaging ride without feeling dull.
Acceleration
Car and Driver recorded an 8.1-second 0-60 mph time for the EX-L trim. While slower than many rivals, it still beats the non-hybrid Mazda CX-50 (8.4 seconds) and Volkswagen Tiguan (8.5 seconds).
Towing
Maximum towing capacity is 1,500 pounds when equipped with optional towing accessories.
Fuel Economy
EPA ratings are 28 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for front-wheel-drive models, dropping to 27 mpg city and 31 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. In real-world highway testing, an all-wheel-drive EX-L matched its EPA highway rating at 31 mpg.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The cabin features a honeycomb-textured dash insert that conceals the air vents, paired with a partially digital gauge cluster in LX and EX trims and a fully digital 10.2-inch cluster in the EX-L. The rear seats offer generous legroom and recline for added comfort. Cargo space totals 39 cubic feet behind the rear seats, fitting 12 carry-on bags, two more than the Toyota RAV4.
